MAKE YOUR OWN NATURAL INSECT REPELLENT USING ESSENTIAL OIL

DIY Natural Mosquito Repellent Using Essential Oil

Mosquitoes are such a pain in our lives. These pesky little flying insects are the bane of our tropical climate and they are entirely too persistent for our own good. With the number of new dengue cases in Singapore reaching a record hgh this year, it is crucial to defend your family against mosquitoes. If you are wary of using insecticides in your home, or unsure about what's in a store bought mosquito repellent, essential oils are a good natural alternative. In this blog we will provide you with the different ways you can use essential oils to deter mosquitoes and insects.

Essential Oils That Repel Insects

Mosquitoes: Citronella, Peppermint, Lemon Eucalyptus, Basil, Clove, Thyme, Lemongrass, Geranium and Lavender

Fleas: Cedarwood, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree,Lemongrass, Lavender, Orange and Pine

Ticks: Rose Geranium, Juniper, Rosewood, Thyme, Grapefruit and Oregano

We realize that there are several different mixtures you can use to make your own insect repellent with essential oils. We will be going over 3 in this article in hopes that everyone finds one that works best for them!

Recipe One - Natural Mosquito Repellent Spray

The "ingredients" and materials you will need for this particular insect repellent are:

  • 100ml of Witch Hazel (one without alcohol or parabens is your best bet for a completely natural repellent)
  • 10 drops of Citronella or Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops of Lemongrass essential oil
  • 6 drops of Peppermint essential oil
  • 6 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
  • 1 funnel
  • 1 empty spray container
  • 1 empty mixing jar to mix the ingredients in

With these, you will want to pour the witch hazel into the mixing jar, along with your essential oils. Once they are mixed well you can use your funnel to pour them into your spray bottle. It's best to shake the mixture up before each use to ensure it doesn't seperate and you are good to go!

Recipe Two - DIY Natural Mosquito Balm

This recipe is for a mosquito repellent balm, so if you are someone who has dry skin all year round this one's for you. The materials you will need are:

  • 8 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
  • 8 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 8 drops of lemongrass essential oil
  • 6 drops of Citronella or Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 6 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 100ml of Virgin Coconut Oil

For this one, the directions are incredibly easy. First mix all of your essential oils and then mix them thoroughly with the Virgin Coconut Oil. Once thoroughly mixed allow the coconut oil to harden by cooling it in the refrigerator. Once that is done, you can simply scoop some out before you go and spread it onto your skin to keep the pests away, and you have the additional benefit of cooling your skin in our humid climate.

Recipe Three - Use An Essential Oil Blend In A Nebulizing DIffuser

This might be the most effective method to keep mosquitoes away. The best part about using a nebulizer diffuser is you don't have to apply anything directly to your skin. Is easy and safe to use. We have an article on the benefits of using nebulizing diffuser, you can click on the link ----------------------------

The materials you need are:

  • A Nebulizing Diffuser
  • 10 drops of Citronella or Lemon Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
  • 10 drops of Lavender essential oil

The directions are relatively easy. You can mix and match and add different amounts of essential oils untill you find a scent that is pleasing to you and your family and very unpleasant to pesky mosquitoes.
